Executive functioning skills help us plan, organize, manage time, get started on tasks, stay focused, regulate emotions, problem-solve, and follow through with responsibilities.

When executive functioning is challenging, everyday tasks can feel overwhelming; even when someone knows exactly what they need to do. Executive Function (EF) Coaching provides individualized, practical support to help children, adolescents, young adults, and adults develop strategies that work for their unique needs.

At Onyx Assessments, our goal is not simply to help you “get more organized.” We work collaboratively to understand where things are getting stuck, identify barriers, build practical strategies, and support greater confidence and independence.

What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning refers to a collection of skills that help us manage ourselves and accomplish goals. These skills are involved in many aspects of everyday life, including school, work, relationships, and personal responsibilities.

Executive functioning includes skills such as:

  • Planning and organization

  • Time management

  • Task initiation

  • Sustaining attention

  • Prioritizing

  • Working memory

  • Flexible thinking

  • Impulse control

  • Emotional regulation

  • Problem-solving

  • Self-monitoring and follow-through

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses in executive functioning. When certain skills are more challenging, having the right strategies and supports can make a meaningful difference.

  • Skills-focused

  • Individualized

  • Focused on building independence

EF Coaching Is Not...

EF Coaching is not psychotherapy, tutoring, or simply providing reminders. Instead, it focuses specifically on developing and strengthening the skills and strategies that support everyday functioning.
