Dion Matheson
Parenting Consultant
I’m an educator and school counsellor with over 15 years’ experience helping children, teens and families thrive in school and at home.
I’m a mom to three children, ages 11 and under, so I understand just how hard parenting can be! As a parenting consultant, I believe all parents are doing the best they can. When parents fall short – which we all do, frequently – it takes strength to ask for help, seek advice, and implement some new strategies.
While raising my own children has been my best education, I also hold a Bachelor’s of Education Degree in Secondary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology in School Counselling, both from the University of Alberta. In my graduate studies, I researched parenting practices that foster growth mindsets in children.
As an educator, I have worked with children from preschool to high school and I have a background coaching adult learners.
In coaching sessions, I apply my expertise in child & adolescent development, education and counselling to help parents discover solutions that fit their family. I encourage parents to take an authoritative approach to parenting that balances warmth with clear boundaries and expectations. I help parents identify changes they can make to their own behaviours and routines so that they can experience more cooperation, peace and happiness in their home. When parents receive a diagnosis for their child, I utilize my knowledge of best practices in education and in parenting, to support parents as they navigate next steps to support their child.
